Hey YOU!As someone with AuDHD, I like to move both slow and fast. In other words, my brain works at lightning speed but that sometimes can overwhelm me and I then have to figure out how to not burn out. My mind hates to wait and that's why this week I've been thinking a lot about patience (and how I kinda suck at it, to be honest)! I think it's the hardest lesson you will learn in business because no one prepares you with how to balance taking action with waiting for results. When you are first starting a business, a lot much time is spent on figuring out how to do things and learning about what you like (and don't like) doing. Many of us end up rushing to the imaginary finish line because of all those "overnight" success stories...the ones that make us feel like we have to move quicker, work harder, and sacrifice every part of ourselves to make it. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely periods of growth you go through where working on your business requires a bit more of you. Like when you're writing website copy or getting ready to launch a new service. But, all those overnight success headlines don't paint an accurate picture of what often takes years to build. And they definitely don't talk about the patience required to build something that feels good. In fact, a lot of the founder stories we read about talk about the late nights, the sacrifices, and the toll it took on their well being. The struggles are seen as a badge of honour because somehow they made it on the other side... But…is it really worth it? Because I don’t know about you, but I’ve started to question why burnout is treated like a prerequisite for success. Why exhaustion is proof you “want it enough"...and why building something meaningful has to come at the expense of your health, your relationships, your joy. But learning how to do things another way is f*cking hard! Learning to be a patient builder is THE journey of being a successful entrepreneur. You know why? Because the finish line doesn't exist. There is always going to be something to learn, change, and grow from in your business. A new strategy, a new look, a new offer or idea. When the thing you want NOW is achieved in your business, there will always be something else to work towards. You will never feely fully complete and that is why working impatiently will just end up hurting you. I get it...patience can feel like you aren't doing enough. It can look like doing "less." Maybe it looks like staying at your not-so dream job or investing money that you won't see an instant return on. It's uncomfortable. But patience...it won't burn you out. Patience helps you avoid costly mistakes and shortcuts, while prioritizing your well-being, and fostering sustainable strategies, skills and relationships. With patience, there are no unattainable standards you have to hold yourself to. Just small moments of progress...some that happen quicker than others and some that take months or years to notice. It's what makes you resilient. Feeling the discomfort that comes with being patient is hard, but it is not the same as suffering. Suffering causes real pain and stress. Discomfort is the unpleasant feeling of not knowing if something will work out or not. It's a lot like anxiety! As someone with anxiety, I know full well that those feelings do not always indicate a true threat. In fact, it's something that can make us fear the unknown and hold us back from taking action. Don't let it! All that to say, patience is a skill that will help us be better entrepreneurs! How patient are you?! Also, did you notice the newsletter name change? Being Yourself is the Strategy has been my trademarked tagline for awhile now and I thought it was time for a little update! 👉 I’m now booking projects for late April. Payments plans available! Hey Reader, Sometimes I get confused... Not about the work that I do. Not about WHY I do the work I do, my offers or my vision for the future (I've got a killer brand strategy)! What I get confused about is how I want to promote my work to the world. As a branding expert, sometimes I feel like I also have to be a marketing expert. The two are not the same (I wrote an article about that here)! Every small business owner is in charge of figuring out what works best for them. You can have all...
Hey Reader, There comes a point in every business when you need to stop wearing all the hats (you totally look cute in all of them, but not when you are wearing them all at once!). It's not easy...especially if you're an eldest daughter perfectionist whose greatest fear is accepting help (like me)! But that's exactly what I did last week when I hired a new copywriter to upgrade my website. There's this feeling that creeps in before a big era of your business, where nothing is broken exactly,...
Hey YOU! My brand hasn't changed much since 2023. But I have. And twice a year, I make sure my photos catch up. Not because I need a new look. But because the version of me showing up in my photos needs to match the version of me showing up in my work. When I feel like my photos aren't representing the current version of me, I feel myself holding back instead of fully showing up. Sound familiar? I see you not sharing your website...not raising those rates...and NOT being visible to the very...
